Music. History.
Being 13, you learn quickly and you remember. And at 13, from seeing the racism on Dick Clark tours, seeing that Bobby Rydell, Bobby Vinton, Dion and the Belmonts, Connie Francis—people we love and did tours with—they stayed in a Sheraton hotel, where we would be dropped off on the highway and go into the motels. The motels sometimes had roaches and mice. And then we’d have to climb up the highway with our bags, and the bus would meet us on the road. I loved Dick Clark; he was so fair. But there’s nothing he can’t change if the people don’t want to change themselves.
La La Brooks, on the racism she encountered while on tour with Dick Clark’s Cavalcade of Stars in the 1960s. (via americanroutes)
